A major art and access project is bringing Rutherglen’s history, people and identity into the station during the town’s 900th anniversary year.
Why the project matters
Rutherglen Station is an important gateway used by residents, commuters and visitors, but parts of the entrance and walkway feel tired and do not yet reflect the character of the town. Rutherglen’s 900th anniversary created a timely opportunity to improve the passenger experience while leaving a lasting community legacy.
What is being created
Rail 74 is working with artist Erin Bradley Scott, local partners and the rail industry on a connected programme of station artwork. The project centres on a major entrance mural and a colourful walkway design, supported by heritage, welcome and wayfinding information. Rather than filling the corridor with separate organisational displays, the developing approach uses one creative visual journey with reference points that allow passengers to discover more about local groups, stories and places.
Designing for the station
The walkway has practical constraints, including railings, window borders, changing light and the need to maintain visibility. Current design work is testing colourful shapes and illustrations that stop at the railings and leave generous gaps for daylight. Historic photographs and references to Rutherglen 900 will be woven into the wider story, while the entrance mural will carry the strongest heritage content. Existing vinyls will need to be carefully removed before installation.
Community and partnership
Rail 74 is coordinating with Grow 73, local schools and community organisations, ScotRail, Network Rail, South Lanarkshire Council, the Rutherglen 900 team and local heritage contacts. The aim is to represent the breadth of Rutherglen without overcrowding the artwork. QR or NFC links are also being explored to connect passengers with local information and onward travel.
What comes next
The next steps are to confirm installation costs and technical requirements, complete the final design, secure rail approvals, print and install the walkway vinyls, and begin the entrance mural. Subject to approvals and the installation programme, Rail 74 is working towards completion and a public unveiling in autumn 2026.
